One of my favorite things to do in video games is character creation. Going from designing the aesthetic of my character, to choosing the attributes that determine their skillset. You could say, it is one of the reasons Tabletop Roleplaying Games entice me so much. It’s also a major component for how I designed my Tabletop RPG, Reborn in Power.
My question to you though is what do you look for in character creators? When writing your own stories, how do you go about making your characters?
I don't play video games. I'm an old man and I just couldn't be bothered to learn them when the kids were growing up. That doesn't take away from the creating of characters though. I make my characters with flaws. The good guys may be the one you're rooting for, but he doesn't have to be "good." I like the idea of the "anti-hero." A character who has come through the Great War and suffers from PTSD in a time when no one understood what it was. He has recurring dreams. And the "bad guy" will be a man who gives to society, the kind who loves his family, but is at heart a patriot and will do whatever he has to for God and country. And I give them traits. Tics, and limps, and stutters. A shock of grey hair, or a scar that mars his/her looks. It's all about layers with me.
Honestly, any form of character creation is great! Developing characters in stories through putting them through hell and having them come back alive to learn valuable lessons. The layers as you say, tacking things on to them that can allow you to explore many facets of their being. It is a skill that all writers should master!
